People
love stories. Nine times out of ten, a photograph that tells a story
will be more engaging than one that does not. Art teachers and
photography mentors will tell you this as a rule of thumb. And I am one
of its believers. This I feel especially so in the realm of portraiture
or photographing people. Commercially and in the interest of glamor and
documentation, there will always be a market and a use for the strait
out classic portrait, where what is important is what a person looks like
or how handsome or beautiful he or she is. But for pure story telling,
entertainment, and human interest, again, nine times out of ten, the
environmental portrait or an image depicting persons in their element or
doing their work or chores, or showing where they live will likely catch people's fancies more.
